Upper Mustang Trek, a lost Buddhist kingdom on verge of Tibet thus should travel with restricted trekking permits which cost U$D 50 per day. A long time ago Upper Mustang was part of Tibet thus hugely influence of Tibetan culture also have a knotted relationship with Tibet hence the past queen of Lomanthang was from Shigatse, Tibet. Upper Mustang is known as tucked behind towering cliff and deep canyons in a semi-arid plateau where the native practicing Buddhism in the 8 century monasteries also Upper Mustang region is famous for the 1000 years old human-made a hidden cave. The cave and monasteries nearby villages are regularly explored by tourist but some cave in the far distance are astounding ancient painting not reach any tourist.
A travel guide book said some of the famous western traveler been to Upper Mustang before officially open in 1992 for the international tourist namely Toni Hagen, Michel Peissel and David Snellgrove. Also from the 15th to the 17th century, Indian and Tibetan traders follow Kaligandaki River for the salt trading and Upper Mustang became revenue junction. The walled city is formerly known as the forbidden kingdom of Mustang in Nepal where the trekkers can explore the last vestiges of outmoded Tibetan Buddhist culture on the planet.
An Upper Mustang region is lying beyond western Nepal highest peak, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri as well compressed by Thorong la pass and Upper Dolpo trek in the Himalayas. A semi-arid Upper Mustang is spanning into the north corner of the Annapurna conservation area and connects with Tibetan plateau on Kora La pass (Border of Tibet). The magical trans-Himalayas area is heavily populated by Tibetan original ethnic groups, loba tribe. Lobhas do traditional work agriculture, animal husbandry, trading, and life support and since last decade tourism helping the uplift living.
The barren moonscape tantalizing Upper mustang have numerous of charming monasteries including Konchok Ling Cave, Ghar Gumba, Jhyampa Monastery, Thubchen Monastery, Choedye Monastery, Kabung Nar Gompa Kang, Mandala cave, Phodaling Cave (Goije Phu), Chukumau Dhakpu Cave, Shaka Phu Cave, Marchung Cave, Luri Cave, Tashe Kabung, Tangya Kabung, Charang cave, Dhakmar Cave, Chili Phu and Tama Gaon Cave.

Daily itinerary

A 20-minute small plane presents a stunning mountain view of the Annapurna mountain range and Dhaulagiri. A thrilling flight landing at Jomsom airport, the airport is nestled on Mustang valley. Also can reach Kagbeni by day drive from Pokhara and it will be 10 hours shaky drive including paved and off-road drive and passes villages, waterfall, hot spring, and boulder gorge. After breakfast tied-your shoes less than approximately 4 hours trekking on the wide barren valley with passes few villages to Kagbeni villages. During your ramble, the trail also provides a stunning view of Nilgiri range, upon arrive Kagbeni get a magnificent view of Thorong peak. The oldest village have Tibetan cultural flavor and also have beautiful gompa on Shore of Kaligandaki River. In April can see thousands of Hindus doing ritual on confluence Glacier River.

After breakfast entering to Upper Mustang region with checking Upper Mustang restricted trekking permit. The landscapes are such amazing in the eroded valley also passes red and white painted chhortsen west bank of the Kali Gandaki River. A little uphill brings us tiny Tangbe village then follow the level trail a side of a river to Chhusang and visit tiger cave above the village in a lunch break.A short distance walk let us cross a river and see amazing sights of 16 lineup cave above the trail where impossible to reach without proper climbing. Around 20/25 minute steep climbing up bring us another beautiful village of Upper Mustang, Chele.

A trek from Chele to Ghiling is relatively harder than yesterday, most of the day ascending up on the infertile ridge with a stunning view of Yakawa Kang, Thorong Peak and mount Nilgiri. Upon crossing small summit, Dajori La and short descend to Samar village. From Samar village, we follow narrow pebbles trail including up and down to Rangjung Drakpuk monastery believed to be found in 8 century and Padmasambhaba had done meditation for a long time. After a witness to see a hidden cave on the cliff, gentle up trail on the shrubs reaches Syanboche village. From here around 45-minute easy path to Ghiling village and get awesome view mountains often see Jackal around here. Right above Ghiling village has beautiful Tibetan monastery and also possible to watch evening and morning daily ritual.

A trek from Ghiling to Charang is approximately 22 km and takes 7/8 hours. A trail contains flat, up and down also pass such wonderful Buddhist sites. From Ghiling hamlet follow gentle up a route with view stunning mount Dhaulagiri to Nyi La pass (13185 ft) and then steeply descend to Ghami village. Ghami is dense population settlement, after Crossing River slightly climb up and ramble a side of 305-meter Ghami mani wall, a longest Mani wall of Nepal. The Tsarang route passes viewpoint and gets the best view of the red and white color ancient stupa on the bottom of the Dhakmar red cliff. Again ascending up to the ridge, from here get panoramic Mountain View and magnificent eroded landscapes and also can see Luri Gomba on far distances above Yara village. Now around 2 hours descending on rain shadow valley against the dry wind to Tsarang village, a summer palace of Mustang King. After room check-in and rest sightseeing to Charang palace and the monastery at the edge of the village.

A distance of the trek from Tsarang to Lomanthang is approximately 12 km and the maximum percentage of a trail is flat with gently up. From village short descend to the river, a stream follows down from Ghar gomba and confluence to Kaligandaki River. From river gentle climb up to the small ridge, an edge provides the best view of Tsarang village with a view of Himalayas on a background. As walk pushing onward to Lomanthang on remoteness and Buddhist cultural region passes another beautiful and colorful stupa Sungda Chhorten and believed the king has stored precious ornament and Khampa had stolen. Then after while a branch trail from Luri Gomba meet up on the main route before arriving to Lo Manthang. A Lo la pass provides a picturesque view of the walled city where the palace built in the midst of the village. You will see wider semi-arid canyon as far as you sights then trail dropped to Lomanthang. After lunch touring around the walled city and visit 15th-century Choedyen monastery where more than 100 neophytes are learning Buddhism, Thubchen monastery and Jhyampa monastery built in 1447 Ad.

It is full day tour to Chhoser village, there are several monasteries and cave nearby lobhas residence can do day trek by walking. After breakfast follows Chhoser village route north of Lomanthang, side of a fresh stream and throughout the villages Nenyul, Arka, Ghom, Garphu then little ascend up to 5 storey Garphu cave, Nyphu Gumba (half cave and half monastery), Yachebu monastery and Namgyal monastery. Also possible to visit Samjhong village one of the remote and cultural Tibetan settlement in the north of Lomanthagn can so visit Konchok Ling cave, and only a handful tourist visited since it found.

We are leaving from the capital of Lomanthang, after crossing short climb up bring us Lo la pass then follow branch trail, a trail is narrow and wilderness. After 2 hours trek, you reach to Dhi village on the bank of Kaligandaki River. In this region, a pattern of the wind-swept mount is totally different than another route. On riverside see Lobhas doing farming of buckwheat and potatoes then trail gently ascending on side of a river to Yara Gaun. From here can see the trail leading to Damodar Kunda, a holy pond where Kali Gandaki River begins.

After breakfast, half day tour to Luri Cave via Ghara village, ancient Luri gomba set above the villages on the ridge and the path is climbing up on gravel to the 3 storey sanctum hidden cave. The Luri gompa has medieval era painting of meditation and Kabung also get a breathtaking view of unfruitful terrain. Then trek returned to Yara village and after lunch trek retraces across the river to Charang village, a path offers amazing sights of the walled eroded landscapes.

A trek begins from Tibetan flavor village trek ramble on the plateau and thru seasonal grain farm. A gentle up trail taking you through Marang and Saukre village with getting the stunning view of Damodar peak and Bhrikuti peak to Ghar Gompa, a first Buddhist monastery in Upper Mustang and built in the 8th century. The main Lo-Ghyekar monastery has red painted and several traditional Chhorten surrounding it. The trek continues with following narrow pebble trail on the sloppy hill till the small ridge after than steeply descending on crumbles path to Dhakmar village. North face of the Tibetan style village is a guard by red painted Dhakmar cliff, the myth said demon blood spreading on the sanctum cliff in the 8th century.

Today is day 10 of Upper Mustang trek and exit from restricting are of Upper Mustang region. After breakfast walking huge barren pasture on the bottom of Dhakmar cliff and often cross Ghami Khola then arrive Ghami village. From here we jump up on the four-wheel jeep and then 4 hours' drive drops us Chhusang village, a valley of an eroded cliff.

From Chhusang village trek onwards uphill till Gyu La (4070 m) via Tetang village on the narrow sandy path. The Gyu La pass offers a grand view of semi-arid Kaligandaki River and sheer of the mountains range including Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and Annapurna range etc. From the summit, we walking down to Muktinath village and explore spiritual important of Hindus and Buddhist. Highlights of Muktinath temple is natural burning gas, 108 water sprout of a different image of animals, Nuns' Monastery, Buddha statue, Narasimha temple (Half man and half lion), Mharme Lha Khang Gompa, Laxmi Narayan temple and holy pond. Then after exploring Muktinath religious area walk down to lodge at Rani Pauwa.

It a wonderful trek on Mustang valley on apple orchid, the trail contains gentle up and down to Jomsom via Lupra village, a village where local practicing Bon Buddhism in the Himalayas.

An exciting flight takes 18 minutes to get back Pokhara if the weather permitted catch splendorous Mountain View from both windows of a small plane. Also can see the countryside and deepest gorge of the planet. Upon arrival Pokhara airport transfer to your hotel then half day Pokhara sightseeing. A Pokhara day tour let you explore Davis fall, boating on Phewa Lake, Tibetan Refugee Camp and Bat Cave.

​How to reach Jomsom

Upper Mustang trek walk begins from Jomsom and drives and flies option are obtainable to reach Jomsom from Pokhara and Kathmandu. Daily a-18-minute adventurous mountain flight operating from Pokhara as long as good weather, it flying right above the deepest gorge of the planet between 2 highest mountain of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Traverse by road, both Kathmandu and Pokhara, there are direct buses available, it will be long jarring bus ride probably 11 hours from Pokhara and 17/18 hours from Kathmandu

​Upper Mustang Trek Permits

As Mustang beyond the Kagbeni is bisected as a restricted area where international tourist can only travel after obtaining Upper mustang restricted trekking permit from local trekking company either from Kathmandu or Pokhara. Upper Mustang trek permit cost U$D50 per day and minimum 2 trekkers require also need to buy at least 10 days permit. Also, have to Annapurna conservation are permit and it can pay in local currency and cost Rs-3000 per person. Plus licensed guide is mandatory. Upper Mustang trek classified as a moderate trek in the Himalayas with short steady climbing as well steeply descending on the dry wind. It recommends for average physical fit trekkers also for a novice without prior experienced. 4400 m above sea level is the maximum height of trek where average day walk is 5/7 hours.
