Recommend side trips in Everest trekking

Along the Everest trekking wiser to spend few extra nights around Namche Bazaar and other major villages then do some side trips to the nearby viewpoints. A side trips before reaching the ultimate destination on the journey make the entire trips fabulous, extraordinary and lifetime. So several side trek can do afternoon and some of them take a complete day. We highly recommend trekkers do some of these side trips as your time allows.   

Thaktul/Rimijung Monastery 

The beautiful Buddhist monastery set above the Dudh Koshi valley near Phakding village. The 500 years old monastery is destroyed by the devastating earthquake in April 2015 then refurbished has been completed in early 2019. A trail to Thaktul monastery (Pemacholing monastery) is steeply uphill from the end of Phakding village throughout the pristine rhododendron and pine forest. The side trek provides picturesque sights of the large Phakding village and meandering Milky River. As you climb higher mountain scenery becomes magnificent. On the route also can visit another beautiful village Gumela. 

Kongde View Hotel (4,250 m)

Kongde view hotel, the highest altitude deluxe hotel in the Everest region that gives lifetime travel experience. It provides a wide-range Himalayas view with an impressive alpine valley, the best view of picturesque Namche Bazar. There are two different ways to reach this luxurious lodge AKA viewpoint either fly over the meandering Dudh Koshi valley by shared or private helicopter from Kathmandu or Lukla. Also can do a day trip from Tok Tok village on the second day of your Lukla flight. This amazing landmark can be reached from Thame village, most travelers get here with selecting Everest luxury lodge trek that route is a scenic loop in Everest national park from Lukla, Namche Bazar, Thame, Kongde View Lodge, Phakding then get back Lukla.

Newly discovered Hillary Memorial viewpoint above Kunde village, a vantage point can reach from Namche Bazar and only 45-min further trek from Khunde village. I believed it is an excellent viewpoint and a perfect day tour from Namche Bazar. The route to Hillary memorial viewpoint is gentle uphill into the short tree lines from Khunde monastery, the viewpoint has three typical Chhorten which believed to be the representative cemetery of Everest summiteer. From here you will see a wider view of Dudh Koshi valley and the high mountains including Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Island peak, Lhotse & Shar, Mount Makalu, Kusum Khangkaru, Konde Peak, Kangtega, Taboche, etc. Physical fit travel can complete circuit day trek from Syangboche – Khunde – Hillary Memorial viewpoint – Khumjung – Hotel Everest view, it might take about 6-7 hours.

Hotel Everest View

Hotel Everest view, first luxurious hotel in Everest trekking and built-in 1971. The hotel itself is viewpoint and approach 360-degree Mountain View. Specialized in the hotel, each room offers a breathtaking view of Mount Everest and nearby snow peak. The hotel has received the certificate of Guinness book the world record of the highest altitude comfort hotel in 2004. Hotel Everest View is one of the favorite day tour from Namche Bazar on the acclimatization day. Probably 99% of trekkers choose Everest view hotel for the side trip. Hotel Everest view route is steeply ascending from Namche village and climb on stone-stairs on the ridge to Syangboche, the panoramic scenery of the mountains and villages make the hike extraordinary. It takes around 2 hours to reach Everest view hotel viewpoint from Namche also can do short side trip from Khumjung and Kyanjuma village. 

 Lawudo Gompa

Lawudo Gompa, one of the sacred Buddhist places high in the Himalayas and the monastery located out-track of the main route above Mende village where hardly any tourist reach. The Gompa has a few separate buildings and is divided for the kitchen, bedroom, dining hall, Buddhism practice room, and the main temple where the monks do the daily ceremony in the morning and evening. There is a private cave where one of the Guru Lama Zopa Ringboche had done meditation for 20-years in his life. Lawudo Gompa is a half-day trek from Namche Bazar also can do side trips while heading to Thame village. A trail contains flatten, moderate and steeply climbing on the juniper shrubs and mountains herbs as well as walking into the rhododendron and pine forest where high chance to encounter colorful Himalayan Monal. The Buddhist monastery located above the valley and it provides a grand view of the landscape variation and the high snowcapped mountains. From the monastery walk further up on off the beaten area and visit Ksharok and Genukpa Gompa.

 Thame Village (3800 m)

 The Thamel villages are widely known as Everest summiteer residence where famous climber born Kami Rita Sherpa (23 time Everest summiteer), Apa Sherpa (21 time Everest summiteer), Ang Rita Sherpa (10 times Everest summiteer without using artificial oxygen). Also, Tenzing Norgay Sherpa spent his precious childhood here. Thamel villages are approximately 9 km far from Namche Bazar and round trip is almost 18 km. The route is pretty easy with a moderate climb on the pine and rhododendron forest as well as walking into the Sherpa village. The route is decorated by Buddhist savor like a stupa, chhorten as well as monasteries five-color Buddhist flag blowing into the thin air.

Sundar/Sunder Peak (5,360 m)

That rapid altitude changed help a lot against high altitude acclimatization. The Sundhar/Sundar/Sunder Peak peak route passing ancient Thame Buddhist monastery then steeply ascending on the rocky trail on the ridge to the summit. The summit rewarded an excellent mountain view of Rolwaling mountain range, Thamserku, Mera peak, Kusumkangaru, Kangtega, Kwande also four eight thousand meter peaks on distance namely Cho Oyu, Mount Everest, Makalu & Lhotse.

Ama Dablam Base Camp

It is an extraordinary place on the bottom of technical mount Ama Dablam which laying northeast of Pangboche village. During the climbing season, the base camp is decorated by colorful tented camp as well as the Buddhist praying flags are blowing into the thin air. A Sherpa from Samar village has built a tea house at the base camp and it providing food and accommodation services during the peak trekking season (Spring/Autumn). The Ama Dablam base camp day hike offers excellent mountains vista and the wider Khumbu valley also several snow peaks right behind Mount Ama Dablam. It is a few hour’s walks from Pangboche village, a tiny branch trails leads-out from north of Pangboche village. After brief descend let you cross the small iron bridge over the Imja River then climb up on the large meadow to the Ama Dablam base camp. If the time allows walk beyond the base camp and enjoy the sceneries.     

Day hike to Dingboche [Nangkartshang] Viewpoint

Dingboche viewpoint laying above the Khumbu valley and it is head of Dingboche village. The side trip to Dingboche viewpoint [Nangkartshang Peak] is sharply climbing on the ridge and admire the stunning mountains vista of the surrounding area as well as glacier and landscapes variation. Total trek distance would be a 5 km round trip. A side trip to Nakarshang viewpoint (5000 m) is an excellent day tour which gives you enough time acclimatization with high altitude. Several traditional Chhorten and 5-colors Buddhist flags make the route looks wonderful. If your body support climbs higher and enjoys an exceptional view of the Himalayas, the summit provides widely incomparable Himalayas and overhead the glacier valley. This is the best place to see Mount Makalu, Baruntse peak, Mount Ama Dablam and Taboche peak. After 4-5 hours hike into the thin air turned back to the guesthouse for overnight.  

 Chukhung Ri

Chukhung Ri (5720 m), viewpoint, the rocky peak nestle between Chukhung village (4730 m) and Lhotse Shar. The best and comfortable way to do Chukhung peak side trek from Chukhung village. The distance to the top of Chukhung Ri is approximately 4 km but because of air pressure, less oxygen percentage as well as walking in alpine terrain it takes around 4-5 hours for up and down. We highly request all the traveler attempts to reach the summit slowly with extra rest. You should pack wind resist jacket against the strong wind as well as use a buff to protect your face from moisturized. The summit decorated by a bunch of Buddhist flags also some of the hikers have carved names on the black rock. The entire route and peak offer gorgeous mountain scenery in 360 degrees and the largest glacier.

Imja Lake/Island Peak Base Camp

Island Peak base camp (4975 m), another fabulous day trip from Chukhung village. The trail walking in Chukhung valley glacier with admiring 360-degree mountain backdrop. The round trip takes 6-7 hours and the distance covered 11-12 Km. Island peak base camp trail is relatively easier than climbing Chukhung Ri and Nakarshang viewpoint.        From Chukhung tea house follow a path with gradual climbing on sweep moraine and often passes huge meadow. The end of the pasture sees small trail leads to the east bank of the Imja Tse which leads to Amphulapcha pass to go Mera Peak. Continuously walking on a glacier then the glacier lake appears on the right side of the path and comes cross with tented camp on the moraine that knew as Island Peak base camp. During the peak trekking season (April/May/October/November), we can see numerous of Island peak climber pre-training with require climbing gear. Also high chances to introduce with peak summiteers on the route. Take a short break and also picnic of pack lunch before turned back to lodge. Again should carry sufficient drinking water, energy bar and windproof jacket for a stay away from dry and chill winds.   

Chola Lake

A side trip to Chola Lake offers breathtaking mountain vista and turquoise glacier lake in the Everest region trek.
Chola Lake and Mount Ama Dablam

The glacier melted alpines lake situated a few miles out-track of classical Everest base camp trek and Cho La pass trek. The high altitude turquoise lake located foot of Cholatse peak and the name also delivered from technical climbing Cholatse peak. A lake easily accesses from Dughla village also offers a stunning view from Cho La Pass trek route.

Awi Peak (5240 m)

The Pyramid together managed by Ev-K2-CNR community and Nepal academy of science and technology established an international weather forecast laboratory. The international Pyramid station located few miles above Lobuche villages, 5,050 m above sea level on the south face of the Mount Everest base camp. Currently, the local entrepreneur running Nepalese style tea house, it has accommodation capacity for 20 travelers where a hot shower and Wi-Fi internet are available 24-hours. Can do side trips from Lobuche in hours hike and also possible to add-on while trekking to Gorakshep in next day.  

Everest base camp (5364 m) side trip

Everest Base Camp

The south Everest base camp located 5364 m above the sea level on Sagarmatha national park of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality of Khumbu Nepal. The Everest base camp is surrounding by high snowcapped peaks and Tibetan plateau is another side of this peak. EBC laying on giant Khumbu glacier next to Khumbu icefall, it frequently shifting during the summer because of glacier melting. The distance between nearest lodge “Gorakshep” and Everest base camp is roughly 3.5 km one-way and requires at least 2.5 hours walk for an average stroller on the moraine of Khumbu glacier. The entire hike provides splendid sceneries of thrilling Khumbu glacier into the thin air also possible to meet with Mount Everest climber during the spring season (April/May). Also, the base camp is occupied with the colorful tented camp. The path is completely unstable which contains pebble, grit, and rock. Side trip to Kala Patthar Summit (5645 m)

Kala Patthar is well known for the best view of Mount Everest, Everest base camp and Khumbu glacier. Most probably highlights the trek and recommend for a sunset view on Mount Everest and the entire Everest mountain range. Kala Patthar is around 1.5 Km far from the tea house and most of the path is climbing up on pebble and rock with an enormous view of the surrounding mountains and the large sleeping glacier. It is roughly 2 to 3 hours trekking ascent to the top and then roughly 1-hour descent to the lodge. No matter walking to Kala Patthar viewpoint for sunrise or sunset should wear wind resist jacket and trouser as well as pack headlamp.

Ngozumpa Ri/Tse (5,553 m)

Newly discovered viewpoint in Gokyo valley, the beautiful viewpoint laying west of the Gokyo village and with facing Mount Cho Oyu. Since it not that popular not easy to notice but on the google/trekking map can see the black ridge in between Gokyo Lake V and VI. Yes, that is the Ngozumpa Tse/Ri, very few travelers dare to climb this viewpoint. A good physical level average walker needs around 7-8 hours to and fro Gokyo Lake. It is a long day trip from Gokyo valley but worth doing this trip and it provides the best view of Mount Cho Oyu and sibling snow-clad peaks. From Gokyo village follow gentle ascent trail on the moraine of Ngozumpa glacier with enjoying a stunning view of the surrounding mountains also passes Gokyo Lake IV (Tonak Pokhari) and Gokyo V (Ngozumpa Tso). Also, catch the best sights of the north face of Mount Everest from Ngozumpa Tso. Our journey continues with steeply climb up from the end of five-Gokyo Lake, a 3 hours climb includes grit and rocky path and exposes the long glacier with walled mountains. From the summit will have the best and close-up view of Mount Cho Oyu, Ngozumpa Kang I, II, Gyachung Kang with entire turquoise Gokyo Lake.

Gokyo Ri/Peak (5,357 m)

The milestone viewpoint sat west side of the longest Himalayas on the head of the Gokyo hamlet. The mountaineer and regular hiker believed best places to take a picture of the panoramic Himalayas that includes four 8000 m peaks, turquoise lake and moraine, and glacier. The view of Mountain Shangri-La is impressive and superior.
It is about 2-3 hours abruptly ascent trek on the pebble path from the lodge to Gokyo Ri/Peak. The only mode to reach this vantage point by feet and most hikers set their way after Lukla flight, any of this trekking route Everest high Passes Trek, Cho La Pass Trek, Gokyo Lake Trek, and Renjo La Pass Trek reached to Gokyo Ri.
