Makalu Base Camp Trek, off the beaten trek route to the foot of mount Makalu with a lot, ascends and descends in the sloppy mountain terrain. The trek exposes true Nepalese culture, diverse nature, and uncountable snow-clad mountains.

Makalu base camp trek has been getting famous since recent years as the tea house established all the campsite. Delightful trek to the foot of the fifth highest Mountain of the planet, Mount Makalu (8,485 m). Makalu Trek route has been well known with the world since the very first time the mountain summited in 1955. An off the beaten path Makalu base camp trek straddling inside the large nature conservation area project, Makalu Barun National Park. The national park is accomplished by green valley, flora and fauna, varied Nepalese culture, high waterfalls cascade into deep gorges, turquoise lakes, flowering vale, mountain terrain, wild animals (rare, common & endanger), snow-clad peaks, crossing high passes in alpine environment and glacier also spot the both Hindus and Buddhist religion divine. We will chance meeting different species of birds, several animals, and Himalayan herbs in the pristine park. Also crossing three different high passes above 4000 m in a single day and catch the best view of the mountain. The journey to Makalu base camp begins from Kathmandu either take about an hour flight or 18 hours bus drive to Khandabri. From Khabari about 4 hours off-road drive brings us Num village and then physical trek commences throughout the crops field and villages to Tashi gaon. The trek continuous into the dense forest of different plants, the large pasture, the gorge of the Siba Dhara boulder, turquoise fresher and glacier lakes, glacier and crossing three high passes (4000 m) above the sea-level to the Makalu Base Camp. After conquered base camp of the word 5th highest mountain and ascent to the nearest viewpoint for the best vision of the Mount Makalu and other snow-clad peaks walking back along the Barun valley to Khandbari to return Kathmandu.

Daily itinerary

Our airport support team receiving you from the arrival gate of the Tribhuvan international airport and then a short drive to your hotel heart of Kathmandu. After room checked-in take your own time and explore the colorful alley of Thamel. We booked your accommodation a 3-star category hotel with inclusive breakfast.

In the morning drive to Kathmandu domestic airport to follow the Tumlingtar flight, a 45-min mountain flight offers grand panoramic Mountain View of northern Himalayas. On arrival Tumlingtar airport, collect baggage then jump on the four-wheel jeep then 4 hours' drive to Num village. Num, a small village of a mixed culture where school and health post are available.

The route follow steeply descent through the forest and rice terrace on the bank of the Arun Khola. We can sights local people fishing on the wild river then walk over the long suspension bridge. From here climb-out against steady uphill with passes limited tea shop. Seduwa village, a large village of multiple ethnic group also have office of Makalu Barun national park where we should check our Makalu trekking permit.

The distance of the trek is not that far but still around 800 m altitude gain in 5 hours trek. The Makalu base camp trek route continues across the village and walking agriculture farm where we can see the plantation of different types of grains like millet, soybean, and maize. The route contains gentle to strenuous climbing up throughout the forest also offers a charming view of Arun valley and picturesque view of nearby villages.
The Sherpa people support their life with doing mountaineering, animal husbandry (Yak, Sheep, Goat), agriculture (cardamom), also collection seasonal herbs from high mountains Dactylorhiza hatagirea, Paris polyphylla, Cordyceps Sinensis, Honey-Combed Mushroom, Delphinium, Rheum Australe, and Swerita Chiraita.

Tashigaon is the last permanently human residence along the Makalu Base Camp Trek. While trekking to Khongma/Kauma Danda mostly passes dense forest of the rhododendron, pine and jupiner where often heard sound of bird chirping and animal roaring and barking. The path to Khongma ridge is abruptly uphill including stone stairs also walking beside the pristine lakes. We take a break at Dhanda Kharka and take a breath then enjoy with impressive mountain vista and lovely lush green landscapes. A trail is colored by Buddhist praying flags, mani-wall and traditional Buddhist stupa. If the weather allow have impressive mountain view and dissimilar landscapes with layers of hills sceneries.

We are spending one more night, Kauma Danda and have an option to spend the day either take a full day rest or do some hike to the nearby hills. Kauma Danda has three tea house with basic accommodation, Sherpa family running the lodge also do Buddhist culture excursion around. The extra nights at Khongma Danda definitely help a lot with your respiration on next following days.

After breakfast our trek to Makalu base camp begins with following the uphill trail along the Kauma Danda, the trail is fully decorated by Buddhist praying flags, stone cairn also Tibetan words inscription on the rocks. The uphill trail passes sacred fresh watery lakes namely Thulo Pokhara, Sano Pokhari, and Kalo Pokhari then rapidly crossing passes Ghaungru La (4,050 m), Keke La (4,127 m), and Sipton La (4,170 m). Now, trailhead dropping on the stony path throughout the dwarf rhododendron forest to Dobhate. Along the journey also see mountain images into the sparkler lakes.

It is pleasant trekking throughout the diverse sceneries and the nature setting dramatically changes from lush green flowering forest to mountain terrain. After descending into the forest then gentle climbing along the Barun River in the Barun valley. The trail passes several animal grazing also spots the yak, sheep, and goat seasonally. The area is so peace and harmony often hear the birds chirping and roaring of the animals. Th Sherpa activately run a tea house in Yangri Kharka with elementary facilities in the main season and also make a short side trek to nearby Gompa. From the lodge have a stunning view of the Shiba Dhara (waterfall) on the huge boulder above the west bank of the stream.

The trek ahead into the Barun valley, we starts trek from lush green forest and end on the beyond the tree lines in the pasture. A trail lead aside of the glacier melted river under the enormous boulder. A trek expose exhilarating waterfall that wavering from high boulder also possible to spot blue sheep and Himalayan Monal. Last section of the trek has short steeply climb over the ridge to Langmale Kharka.

After breakfast short ascent up to the ridge then remaining trek onto the moraine east bank of the Barun River. We also pass the long Glacier Lake then after taking brief break at Shersong resume trek with steady climb to Makalu base camp. Beyond the Shershong you will be surrounding by a lot of the snow-clad mountains. A basic lodge established on the moraine at Makalu base camp and you'll have enormous Mountain View from the lodge.

Awaited day in the Makalu base camp trek we do side trek to nearest viewpoint with following Sherpani Col route. From lodge trekking onto the moraine for an hour then steeply ascending on the ridge. Nameless viewpoint stand around 5,500 m above sea level right above the lodge and it provides excellent mountain vista with Barun Pokhari also the large glacier. Good physical level trekkers requires around 3-4 hours to get the viewpoint after conquered the best view of the world 5th highest Mount Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Peak 7, Peak 6, Peak 4, Baruntse, and Nuptse returned to lodge then rest and relax.

Before set-off the trek take a last glimpse of Mount Makalu then straight descending to Yangle Kharka. Our trail follow on the moraine of the Barunte glacier till Lamgmale Kharka then remaining trek to Yangle Kharka on the forest. Yangle/Yangri Kharka is much warmer than Makalu base camp because the huge altitude dropped.

After breakfast follow the downhill trail along with the free shape Barun River, after 3 hours effortless trek. We climb up throughout the tall pine forest to Dobhate then route covered by dwarf rhododendron and mountain herbs to Thulo Danda, above the Thulo Pokhari. Excellent mountain capture from the tea house.

It is long descending from Thulo Danda to Seduwa village. We follow downhill trail into the mixed vegetation, the path provides amazing landscapes on opposite side and then trek continues thru numerous villages en route. After Tashigaon walking on cultivate agriculture farm to Seduwa village.

Now exit from Makalu Barun national park then route steeply descending from Seduwa to Arun Khola. From here steady climbing up on dense forest to Num where we stop for the lunch. After lunch 3/4 hours off-road jeep drive to Tumlingtar via Khandbari.

After collecting lifetime trekking experience in the Himalayas fly back to Kathmandu, again the mountain flight let you enjoy to see breathtaking Mountain View of the world tallest mountains Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu. Upon reaching Kathmandu domestic airport transfer to your hotel. We are hosting farewell dinner at an authentic Nepalese restaurant with traditional foods as well as live cultural show.

Meals and Room En Route To Makalu Base Camp Trek

Makalu base camp trek recently turned into the tea house trek from tented camping that the reason only limited tea houses are available en route to Makalu Base Camp Trek. As it is off the beaten trek in Nepal only limited trekkers have been and doing this trek throughout the year that means not a commercial as an Everest Trek, Annapurna Trek, and Langtang Trek. Very basic twin sharing bedrooms are available in the stone and wood material building, some of the lodges have toilets outside of the building. Does not have a proper hot shower, trekkers need to ask bucket shower at extra cost.
For the foods along the Makalu Base Camp Trek, there is a menu cart with limited food items and hot drinks. You may choose any foods from the menu but they are master to cook Nepalese foods.


When is best season for Makalu Base Camp Trek

Makalu base camp trek is high altitude trek and the best season plays a vital role to enjoy the trek.
Basically two different seasons are recommending for trekking in Nepal the spring (March-April-May) and Autumn (September-October-November) and also for Makalu base camp trek as well. During the spring March would be harsh for Makalu base camp trek because of the ice and slippery over the three passes but April and May are the best of the season. A lot of the rhododendron and other herbs are flowering in the route and also good weather with mild temperature.
Autumn highly recommended trekking season in Nepal, the weather always stay clear against the blue sky. On the lower elevation landscapes looks very dramatic sceneries because of the green and yellow colors crops field of distinct grains. Need to prepare against the rain in early September then October is the best without any weather issue problem also possible to have snowfall in November.

For the flower exploration trip, July and August are the highly recommend months where the Barun valley is a shower with the blossoming of the distinct color Himalayas herbs.

Winter (December-January-February) not recommended because of snow in the Barun valley also the tea house closedown and extremely cold as well.


Require Physical level for the Makalu Base Camp Trek

Makalu base camp trek categorized moderate to strenuous and it suitable and recommend to the experienced mountain trekkers. Trailhead contains vertical climbing on the stone stairs and steadily descends on the stony and grit lane also crossing the number of passes above 4000 m. Folk have to be used to with the high altitude because few nights sleeping into the thin air and climb to around 5500 m above sea level viewpoint. Adventure lover can continue their journey to Sherpani Col Pass Trek and Lumba Sumba Pass Trek, these passes are very challenging.


Begins and Exit of the Makalu Base Camp Trek

The Makalu base camp trek begins from Khandbari/Tumlingtar, two different airlines operate a daily flight to Tumlingtar from Kathmandu. It is a 45-minute flight that offers close ariel mountain view of Mount Everest range. Also, the drive road linked from Kathmandu to Khandabari. Khandbari is about 500 km east of Kathmandu and it approximately requires 18 hours drive that includes both tar and bumpy road. The drive passes beautiful town Dharan, Hile, and then finally reached Khandbari near to Tumlingtar airport.

From Khandbari follow day to day trek itinerary to Makalu base camp, on foot of the world fifth highest mountains and ascent to the nearest viewpoint to sights the Himalayas and the glacier. Then returning to Kathmandu retrace to Tumlingtar then fly or drive to Kathmandu or continuous trek to Lumba Sumba Pass Trek or Milke Danda Trek or Sherpani Col Pass Trek Or Arun Valley Trek.
