The world fifth highest mountain is Makalu which is neighboring of Khumbu Himalayas range including Mt. Everest and Mera peak which is lies in the Makalu Barun National Park established in 1992 and park spreads 2330 sq. km, area of the Solukhumbhu and Sankhuwasabha districts of eastern Nepal. Covers the Barun valley which is part of a huge international protected area under an agreements between Nepal and China. The most popular trekking peaks of Nepal, The Mera peak 6654m also lies in the Makalu National Park and a large variety of widespread endangered flora and fauna are protected in the region including rhododendrons, orchids, snow leopard, red panda, musk deer, wild boar, yak, Himalayan goat and more than 420 species of birds.
The Makalu Base Camp Trek known as adventurous trekking trail in mid-eastern Himalayas of Nepal. The journey begins from an hrs flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. The trail begins and passing through beautiful villages, landscapes and then cross various high passes such as a Shipton La, Keke La and tranquility Kalo Pokhari lake. The trail provides you finest view of Panoramic Himalayas including Mt. Everest and sister concern Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Chamlang, Mt. Baruntse, Mt. Makalu and numerous others peaks.

Daily itinerary

Upon your arrival at the Tribhuwan International airport, our official representative will receiving you then assist to transfer you in your hotel.

In the morning drive to Kathmandu domestic airport to follow the Tumlingtar flight, a 45-min mountain flight offers grand panoramic Mountain View of northern Himalayas. On arrival Tumlingtar airport, collect baggage then jump on the four-wheel jeep then 4 hours' drive to Num village. Num, a small village of a mixed culture where school and health post are available.

The route follow steeply descent through the forest and rice terrace to on the bank of the Arun Khola. We can sights local people fishing on the wild river then walk over the long suspension bridge. From here climb-out against steady uphill with passes limited tea shop. Seduwa village, a large village of multiple ethnic group also have office of Makalu Barun national park where we should check our Makalu trekking permit.

So the distance of the trek is not that far but still around 800 m altitude gain in 5 hours trek. The Makalu base camp trek route continues across the village and walking agriculture farm where can see the plantation of different grains millet, soybean and maize. The route contains gentle up and hard climbing up throughout forest also offers a charming view of Arun valley and picturesque view of nearby villages.

Tashigaon is last permanently human settlement en route of Makalu base camp trek route. A path beyond the Sherpa village is marking inside the dense mixed forest where birds and animal made their home. The path to Khongma ridge is abruptly uphill including stone stairs also walking beside the pristine lakes. Upon arrival simple tea shop, the mountains will appear on far distance above the unspoiled wilderness valley.

So spare day in the subalpine zone before towards to alpine and nival climate. The extra nights at Khongma Danda definitely help a lot on your respiration on next following days. A day can be spent with exploring an old Buddhist monastery and the turquoise lake above the camp.

From lodge follow an uphill trail on the ridge then walking over Kauma La (3605 m), Keke La (4127 m), Shipton La (4170 m) also get an incredible view of Kalo Pokhari (3930 m) with breathtaking mountain view of Chamlang (7321 m) and several other snow-capped peaks. From here descending into the dwarf rhododendron forest to Dobate.

From Dobate follow the trail into the dense rhododendron, oak, and silver forest to the small ridge then trail dropping down to glacier melt Barun River. After here the trail continues reverse of the meandering river with passing kharka (Yak grazing/pasture) to Yangri Kharka. Also, see yak carrying a load to Makalu base camp during the climbing period of the year. The Barun valley opens up and also offers outstanding sights of mountains including mount Makalu.

The trek onward on lush dwarf mountain vegetation where possible to spot Himalayan pleasant and some rare animals. Towards to Langmale Kharka, crossing monsoon washed wooden bridge several times. The day trek begins from greeneries and end-up on the moraine and the glaciers.

We trek on arid/barren mountain valley also walking on a glacier, follow Makalu base camp route on along the Barun Khola and glacier to Shershong. The path provides a panoramic mountain view of nearby mountains above the glacier.

Awaited day of Makalu trekking and side trek to Mount Makalu (8485 m) base camp, trek ahead to Makalu base camp on a moraine with enjoying exceptional mountain view including Everest, Lhotse, Kanshung plus numerous snow clad mountains. The trail to and fro Makalu base camp is unstable with small grit where trekking poles are highly recommended. During the spring season, possibly interact with legendary Makalu climbing group at base camp. Also, the turquoise Barun Pokhari is the highlights which situated in the midst of large glacier. After achieving the goal in the life trek back to Sherson for overnight.

After accomplishment the trek retracing towards Yangri kharka via Langmale Kharka and Merek. The trail is mostly going down onto to the glacier, moraine in the freezing temperature with crossing bridges several times. Also, huge altitude drop which makes you feel better.

We follow trek route along free shape Barun River, also passing dwarf rhododendron and verities of mountain herbs shrub. After leaving Barun Khola short ascent up then level trail lead to Dobato camp.

The trail continue gradual and steep climbing–up through dense forest of rhododendron and firs then towards to the passes Keke la, Shipton, Ghungru La, the passes provides awesome view of landscapes and mountains. Then descending Khongma for the camp.

It is long descending from Kauma Danda to Seduwa village. We follow downhill trail into the mixed vegetation, the path provides amazing landscapes on opposite side and then trek continues thru numerous villages en route. After Tashigaon walking on cultivate agriculture farm to Seduwa village.

Now exit from Makalu Barun national park then route steeply descending from Seduwa to Arun Khola. From here steady climbing up on dense forest to Num where we stop for the lunch. After lunch 3/4 hours off-road jeep drive to Tumlingtar via Khandbari.

After collecting lifetime trekking experience in the Himalayas fly back to Kathmandu, again the mountain flight let you enjoy to see breathtaking Mountain View of the world tallest mountains Mount Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Makalu. Upon reaching Kathmandu domestic airport transfer to your hotel. We are hosting farewell dinner at an authentic Nepalese restaurant with traditional foods as well as live cultural show.

Time to say good bye to all your Nepalese friends! You may want to go on a last minute shopping spree. You'll be transffering to international airport 3 hours before your scheduled flight.
