Lumba Sumba Pass Trek AKA Kanchenjunga and Makalu Base Camp Trek, a trek offers exclusive nature diverse and vivid culture glimpse of indigenous people and crossing high altitude Lumba Sumba Pass. A trek is hidden until 2012 but the local people from Olangchun and Thudam crossing Lumba Sumba Pass to visiting relatives and yak cross the high altitude pass for the pasture. Mainly Thudam people traverse over the pass to purchase the house needs from the Tibetan market which is around 20 km far from Olangchun Gola. A virgin trek is overwhelmed by Makalu trek and Kanchenjunga trek because compressed by the world's third and fifth-highest mountains Kanchenjunga and Makalu. Lumba Sumba pass trek starts from Kathmandu and can be reached to Phungling, Taplejung by drive, or flight. From Phungling we drive to Thapethok and it is complete dirt and bumpy road.
Then a physical trek commences and follows the uphill path until Lumba and Sumba pass into the villages and along the Tamor river often walking aside from high waterfall and crossing wild Tamor river repeatedly. The tranquility village and their charming culture give a plus point to make a trek lifetime celebrations. Upon trek, over adventurous Lumba Sumba pass, we follow the downhill path into the forest, villages, and varied landscapes also along the Arun River then take a jeep from Barun Dovan or Num to Khandbari/Timglingtar. After completing off the beaten Lumba Sumba pass trek we have the option get back Kathmandu by overland or air transportation.
Daily itinerary
Day 00: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350 m)

Our airport representative will be waiting for you at the arrival gate of the Tribhuvan international airport with your name on the signboard. Upon receiving you then
transfer to your hotel, it about 30 minutes' drive to town, depends on
your hotel location. After room check-in have leisure time until
official meeting at evening.
Day 01: Fly to Bhadrapur then drive to Phungling/Taplejung (1,500 m)

Early morning shifting to Kathmandu airport then take an hour flight to Bhadrapur, the airport located eastern Nepal nearby India. If any trekkers traverse India border (West Bengal) we receive them from Kakarbhitta border about 30 km away from Bhadrapur airport. Upon arrive Bhadrapur take a jeep and drive to Phungling (Taplejung). It is around 8 hours private jeep drive, the drive passes town and the beautiful tea garden. Phungling drive offers mesmerizing sceneries of the Himalayas, magnificent landscapes of rice paddies, and valley.
Day 02: Drive to Thapethok then trek to Lelep (1,710 m)

Lumba Sumba trek begins with a drive on the dirt road to Thapethok, a drive takes through beautiful cardamom and rice farm with a glorious view of cultivated landscapes. The drive passes along the sloppy mountains with capture impressive view of the valley till Thiwa village. Now our drive continues along the Tamor River to Thapethok village. Before proceeding trek from Thapethok we check Lumba Sumba trek permit and then trek follow the west bank of the river to Pembu village. Your trek incessant inside the large cardamom farm and rice field also pass several villages. We resume trek and follow a wide stone stair path between the farm areas to Lelep village. A trail exposes a beautiful view of the Tamor valley and also observation of a branch trail leading to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. If the time indorsed walk into the Lelep village and short cultural excursion inside the indigenous people habitats.
Day 03: From Lelep trek to Ila Danda (2,030 m)

From Lelep, the trek commence along the wild Tamor River then after while crossing high vibrate white river and then walking east bank of the river. The path is surrounded by dense cardamom bamboos and tropical trees. Also maximum trail is occupied by forest than villages, high chance to spot different species of birds and the some animals. We take a break at Gowatar village and look at Kasturi peak sheer of the Tamor River. We also get stunning view of mesmerizing waterfall as you have seen in the picture. A further trek to our Camp Ela/Ila Danda and the path contains gentle uphill through the mixed vegetation. Limited home-stay accommodation is available here in the houses
Day 04: From Ila Danda trek to Olangchun Gola (3,190 m)

We have a long day trek to Olangchun Gola. There is no villages and tea house between Ila/Ela Danda to Olangchun Gola. Have to carry sufficient drinking waters and enough foods for the day. Most people breakdown a day at Jongin, beautiful pasture along the Kosi River. As we plan to go directly Olangchung Gola it takes solid 8 hours trek and the path comprised gentle uphill and level through the dense forest a side of the river. We also pass large bamboo plantation where high chance to spot Red Panda. Also passes landslide section and stunning water fall after monsoon season as we reaching higher elevation walking inside the tall trees of pine, rhododendron, and Oak. Gola has comparatively comfortable accommodation than other tea house and amazing Buddhist flavor culture.
Day 05: Rest and Acclimatization at Olangchun Gola

As part of an acclimatization day, we are exploring around Olangchung Gola. Olangchung Gola is complete Buddhist savor village also influence of the Tibetan culture. An authentic Nepalese mountain house with wood slab roof also pile of stone and wooden pillar support the house. The ancient and oldest Buddhist monastery set right above the Diki Chholing Gumba, believed to be one of the ancient among the Buddhist monasteries in Nepal. Probably take a hot shower before onward to Lumba Sumba Pass because not possible to take hot shower again until reach Chyamthang village. A lot Chinese product can find little shop like alcohols, soft drinks, noodles and some snacks.
Day 06: Trek From Olangchun Gola to Langmale (4,030 m)

From Olangchun Gola the hike commences on the wide motor road that connected to Tibet but after while we follow branch trail on the west bank of the Tamor Nadi. The trek onwards on Lumba Sumba direction that complete wilderness above the Olangchun Gola. We hardly see any human activities beyond Olangchun Gola except the Yak husbandry. Lumba Sumba Pass Trek Route fully covered by pine and rhododendron forest also dwarf rhododendron, black juniper, and shrubs of the Himalayan herbs closed to the Langmale. Plenty of the mountain herbs can find along the trail to Lumba Sumba Pass including Picrorhiza kurroa Rheum, Nardostachys Dactylorhiza hatagirea, Ophiocordyceps sinensis, and Rhubarb. You will be accommodate in the tented camp and kitchen team prepare the dinner earlier than other day.
Day 7: Trek from Langmale to Pass Camp/Lumba Sumba Phedi Camp (4,630 m)

The vividly bio-diversity sceneries changed from greeneries to alpine terrain, and the dwarf and short mountain herb plant leaving behind and walking on the moraine and more open landscape. We trek along the upstream with gentle to strenuous climb on open mountain valley. then we reach the large ground which is perfect area for grazing, the local said often visible snow leopard in this area also come to hunt the young yak. Again ascending from end of the yak pasture, the ridge provides excellent view of the large pasture on foot of the mountains with meandering river. From here short level grit path bring us camp site, Pass Camp also called Lumba Sumba Phedi Camp under the huge boulder.
Day 08: Crossing Lumba Pass (5,100 m) & Sumba Pass (5,180 m) then Thudam (3,550 m)
10-11 Hrs Trek B/L/D With Hot Drinks Home-Stay
The most dramatic day of the Lumba Sumba Pass trek crossing two different passes en route to Thudam village, the first village after the vivid high altitude Lumba Sumba Pass. The kitchen team prepare the breakfast and pack lunch early in the morning then the trek departure with following steeply climb-up on the Stoney and moraine also passes small lakes before arriving first pass, Lumba Pass (5,100 m). We leave early in the morning because a long walk about 10 hours trek also avoiding the wind on the top. The summit provides a good view of Mount Kanchenjunga, Jannu, Mount Makalu, Chamling, and several other snow-clad peaks. A trek continuous on the unstable path to second pass Sumba pass (5,180 m), the summit is embellished with Buddhist praying flags and stone cairn. We resume trek with long descending along the stream and often passes seasonal yak and sheep graze. Soon get back to greeneries where you can spot plenty of dwarf rhododendron forest and Himalayas herbs. Thuram villages is really traditional mountain village with a wooden roof and a pile of stone made the house. It has around 40 houses and most of them doing animal husbandry for life-supporting.
Note:
Maximum trekkers make a camp around 3 hours walk down from the Sumba pass at nice meadow and mount Makalu can see clearly above the valley. This camp site (Yak Kharka) does not have any tea house and the Thudam is only about 3-4 hours downhill trek. If you prefer to spend night in lonely and wilderness spot your logistics arrange with contacting Thudam villa
Day 09: Trek From Thudam to Yak Kharka (2,765 m)

We carried on your Lumba Sumba pass trek along the bank of wild Chujung Khola, throughout the day trekking into the wild forest often hear birds chirping and barking of the animals. A downhill trail is covered by the bushes and tall trees also can see long moss hanging on the trees. We leave from Thudam with sufficient drink water for 5-6 hours downward trek also pack-lunch. We settlement our camp on the seasonal yak graze pasture probably spot the yak around here. We hire the camping crew from next village Chyamthang and next day together return to Chyamthang village
Day 10: Trek from Yak Kharka to Chyamthang (2,340 )

As we walking down getting into the deep and tall forest, the trail is surrounded by tall forest of different type trees. There is no human residence on our route to Chyamthang but still see some braches trail leading into the other direction that goes to another villages, jungle and pasture. Maximum of the path led down but still we climb up some section, a short ascend bring us to the ridge and we clearly see sloppy mountains with dotted villages and Arun Valley below the village. We then follow downhill trek on the huge boulder also into the forest to bank of the Arun River, the river coming down from Tibet. After crossing the River steady ascent to Chyamthang village, a large village of Sherpa and Bhote, since recent year most of the people changed religion from Buddhist to Christian also see church. Some of the international trust run the health post and also have police station and school.
Day 11: Trek from Chyamathang to Hatiya (1,560 m)

Throughout the day we trek downhill and frequently passing the villages of different ethnic groups also rapidly trek along the different crops field. We sights one of the road leading to Kimathang, border of Tibet and another small trail led to Makalu Base Camp. We descending through large colorful village then constant cultivated farm, forest also crossing the suspension bridge over the streams. You will also get magnificent view of the mountains above human settlement and dense jungle. After long time getting back to subtropical temperature and walking aside of the rice terrace. A 5-6 hours mountain and mismatched landscapes trekking bring us Hatiya village. There is trek permit check-point also check our Lumba Sumba Trek Permits before proceed trek to next destination.
Day 12: Trek from Hatiya to Gola (1,130 m)

We departure from the village walking aside from the mani-wall and also see the Tibetan world inscription on the rock. Our trail led into the steamy valley where the two giant rivers Arun and Barun influence. A lunch break makes here and breath with serenity sceneries of the green valley. Down here we can get mixed culture glimpse of Rai, Limbu, Gurung, Tamang, Bhote, and Sherpa. The sceneries also dramatic change into the culture and merge valley than the mountains.
A remaining trek to the campsite endures above the Arun valley into the villages and farming land to Gola village. Nepal government constructed the jeep track here that supposed to connect with Tibet in the future.
Day 13: Trek from Hatiya to Hedangagadi (1,180 m)

Our trek goes above the enormous river, the walk continuous on the paddies field, little jungle and the villages to our camp Gadhi. It is about 5-6 hours trek from beginning to ends, if the time permits can do fishing for the fun on the Arun River.
Day 14: Trek from Hedangagadi to Arun Dovan then drive to Khandbari (600 m)
2 Hrs Trek & 5 Hrs Drive B/L/D With Hot Drinks Lodge/Guesthouse
An 30 minute trek bring us east bank of the river, where possible to hire the jeep to Khandbari. If we missed the jeep then have to trek Nun village, it is about 90 minute uphill trek.
From here we drive to Khandbari, headquarter of the district. We have about 4 hours' drive on the bump and jerk road. The drive passes beautiful unequal sceneries of the mountains, valley, sloppy hills and culture excursion. Khandbari is pretty big town with all most completely the necessary goods also weekly local market.
Day 15: Fly or Drive back to Kathmandu (1,350 m)

Essential Information
Best trekking season for Lumba Sumba Pass Trek
We are recommending 3 main trekking season Spring, summer and autumn for Lumba Sumba Pass trek.
Post winter (March, April and May) are the peak season but possible to have a lot snow during the March and April. But still possible to cross the high altitude Lumba Sumba Pass and May is perfect month of the spring season comparatively less snow than earlier month.
Pre autumn (June, July and August), these three month is monsoon in Nepal, pretty much rain every day, possible to find a lot of leeches along and crossing some landslide section and stream. Between Olangchun and Thudam terrain covered with distinct color of wild flowers.
Autumn (September, October and November) is the best of the year for Lumba Sumba Pass trek, till second week of September might have rainfall and then throughout third week of September to November will have perfect weather and hardly snow around.
Winter (December, January and February) snowing in Nepal mainly in the mountain terrain and extremely cold in the Himalayas.
