Khari Khola to Everest base camp trek an alternative way of the Lukla flight. Recently Nepal government constructed a jeep road from Kathmandu to Khari Khola. The Khari Khola to EBC trek without flying to dangerous Lukla airport. Khari Khola Everest base camp trek is the best accessible Everest trekking route with avoiding air transport. The nearest jeep station from Lukla airport is Khari Khola and it is a long day trek. About 30 Km far from Lukla and roughly 305 Kilometers distance from Kathmandu. Daily itinerary

The flight to Kathmandu provides a beautiful view of the Himalayas. Upon the flight land in Tribhuvan international airport. You’ll process for the customs and then the airport representative welcome at the arrival gate. Then private drive to your hotel, the guide will brief you about the historical and cultural Kathmandu valley. After settling the accommodation discover colorful Thamel street.

Khari Khola is about 305 kilometers far from Kathmandu. And it is about 12 hours’ drive on the mountain road, it also depends on road condition. From Kathmandu reach to Khari Khola by public or private jeep. If prefer to take a public jeep then have to swap the jeep at Phaplu or Salleri. The public jeep departed around 5 am from Kathmandu and then stopped a few times for the toilet and food break before touching down the Khari Khola. It is a long drive on the poor quality road but dramatic scenery makes the journey enjoyable. The journey passing along the Sunkoshi River to Ghurmi. We then drive uphill and passing Okhaldunga and Patale to Phaplu/Salleri. After Phaplu off-road drive with crossing Dhudkoshi river to Khari Khola.

Khari Khola is the large village on the route and it has a health post and school. After breakfast trek starts walking through the village and from the ditch ascend to Bupsa village. From here our trek continues the newly constructed jeep track to Thamdanda. Seasonally the private and shared jeep get Thamdanda from Phaplu or Salleri. Our uphill walk ends at the Kari la pass (2,870 m) which is the border of the Solu and Khumbu region. The small pass provides a good view of the lush green landscapes below the snowcapped peak. The trailhead into the rhododendron forest to Paiya and then a short hike to Chutuk la.

After breakfast the trek towards Phakding village, it about 6-7 hours trekking over the forest and village. The trail passes beautiful Surkey village on the foot of the Tenzing-Hillary airport. Throughout the day trek presence diverse landscapes of the Dudh Koshi valley. On arrival Chhuplung, the route became busy because the Lukla to Everest base camp route come-cross. From here about 2 hours trekking to Phakding village, popular trekkers stop-point en route of the Everest base camp trek.

The route to Namche Bazar intersects through forest of the rhododendron along the Dudh Koshi River. We rapidly crossing the steel cable suspension bridges on the milky river. Often see the wild animals Himalayan goat and pleasant in the UNESCO listed Sagarmatha national park. We then crossing Hillary bridge and begins steep ascent through forest to Namche Bazar. Upon arrive Namche starts to view snow peak around Namche Bazar, also get glimpse of the Mount Everest. Namche Bazar is main trading village in the area where the trader and buyer meet.

The acclimatization day at Namche Bazar, the day can be spent in various ways. Namche Bazar is filled with monasteries, shops, restaurants, and hotels. Many day treks can do from Namche Bazar like Thame village, Everest view hotel, and Sir Edmund Hillary Viewpoint.

The trailhead from Tengboche monastery into the rhododendron forest with passing Debuche monastery. We catch a stunning view of mount Amadablama and Emerald River then a gradual ascent to Pangboche village. Also visiting the oldest Buddhist monastery in the region “Pangboche monastery” where can view the hands of the Yeti. A trek endures along the glacier river on foot of the mount Ama Dablam to Dingboche via Samare. The landscapes change into the arid mountains and are surrounded by snowcapped. Staying 2-nights at Dingboche which helps us to adapt the atmosphere.

The extra day at Dingboche village, great opportunity to discover nearly iconic places. The Dingboche village approaches half day to full day trip around. Famous day trips around Dingboche is Chukhung Ri and Narkang Hill [Nangkartshang peak]. This vantage point offers a bird eyes view of the mountains and the valley.

The trek on forth and will move ahead with gradual ascend on the alpine terrain and moraine. As the altitude rapidly gain, it is directly felt while climb-up. About 3 hours walk from Dingboche to Duglha is a gentle climb. The road behind the lunch place “Duglha” steep climb on the pebble and stony boulevard. We stop at Duglha pass to admire the Himalayas and view the memorial stone stupas dedicated to Everest climbers who lost their lives. The venture continues on the craggy mountains and moraine to Lobuche hamlet. We then enjoy the exceptional view of the Nuptse, Lobuche peak, Pumori, and Cholatse in the background.

After breakfast, a trek begins from the Lobuche on the level track on the moraine and it approaches stunning mountain vista on the glacier valley. Relatively it is an easy path but the high altitude and stony terrain make it tough. About 3-4 hours walk on the moraine brought us to the Gorakshep (5180 m), the highest sleeping place in the route. The journey to Everest base camp continues on the rocky moraine and formed an accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris. Approximately 3 hours walk then arrived Everest base camp. The base camp is surrounded by mountains, beside the sloppy Khumbu icefall. In the spring meet the climber at the base camp who are accustomed before scaling Mount Everest. We then head back to Gorakshep before get dark and the temperature turned chilly. The distance from Lobuche to Everest base camp and back to Gorakshepdistance is 12 Km.

Early morning physical demanding trek from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar (5,645 m). The Kala Patthar (black rocky) for breathless Mountain View. The giant snow peaks are Nuptse, Pumo Ri, Lingtren, Lho La, Ama Dablam, Khumbutse, Cholatse, Arakam Tse, Tabuche Peak, Chumbu. Afterward, trek down to Gorakshep and eat a hot breakfast. Then trek roll-down direction of Periche village on the foot of the Cholatse Lake. Actually, it is 100 times easier going down then climbing but the temperature will be chilly and windy as well. It is about a 7-8 hours walk and the distance covered 17 Km.

Trek from Periche village to Namche Bazar distance is 18 Km, the trail contains stroll downhill and climbing. From Periche about 3 hours walk down to Debuche then 40 minutes scaling the hill through the rhododendron forest. From the Tengboche downhill trail let us cross the Dudh Koshi river and then climb to Kyangjuma village. This last opportunity to enjoy the grand mountain view of the Khumbu region and an hour's walk to reach Namche Bazar.

After breakfast, trek down and cross Hillary suspension bridge then walk along the river. We also catch up the last glimpse of Mount Everest then walk through different Sherpa villages to Lukla airport. Approximately 7-8 hours downhill trek on the different terrain. Lukla village is a dense population village and starting and exit point of the Everest trek.
If you prefer to fly back to Kathmandu, we end up trekking here otherwise stick on the plane.

Early morning capture the Lukla flight picture and video then trek begins with steeply descend to Surkey village. From here the terrain changes and climb through the forest to Pakhepani. We then passes Chutuk la, Paiya, Kari la and arrive Thamdanda. From Thamdanda 5 hours drive to Phaplu.

We drive from Phaplu to Kathmandu, it is approximately 10 hours drive on the mountain road. The jeep stops along for the meals, toilet, and stretch the legs. Upon arrival in Kathmandu transfer to your hotel. Evening we host farewell dinner an authentic Nepalese restaurant with a live culture program.

Kathmandu to Khari Khola/Bupsa/Thamdanda drive route

Everest base camp trek without Lukla flight embark from Kathmandu and drive end at Khari Khola or Bupsa or Thamdanda. The drive destination depends on the season, from January to May the drive is accessible to Thamdanda. Then during the monsoon and post-monsoon, the jeep randomly gets Khari Khola.
